Torn Space Theater approaches Matthew López’s play as an exploration of identity as performance. At its center is Casey, a struggling Elvis impersonator whose sense of self begins to unravel when his livelihood disappears. What follows is not a sudden transformation, but a gradual recognition: the version of masculinity he has been performing all along is no less constructed than the world he is about to enter.
Set within a shifting landscape of barrooms, performance stages, backrooms and domestic spaces, the production examines how identity is constructed, fractured, rehearsed, and sustained.
As roles shift and expectations collapse, the play invites audiences to consider where authenticity resides, and whether it exists at all.
